The Iowa Department of Public Safety says the body that was found in a Mahaska County river on Tuesday is that of a woman who was reported missing on Monday.
An autopsy conducted by the state medical examiner’s office identified the body of 24-year-old Ashley Shafer of Oskaloosa. She had been reported missing to the Oskaloosa Police Department Monday morning. According to the Missing Persons Cases Network, Shafer had last been seen Sunday evening at the Santa Clara apartments in northwest Oskaloosa.
Shafer’s body was found in the South Skunk River Tuesday afternoon, near the Glendale Access about four miles northeast of Oskaloosa. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and Oskaloosa police are still looking into the circumstances that led to her death. Authorities say the cause and manner of Shafer’s death are pending that investigation. They also say that there is no known threat to the public at this time.
