Police: Ottumwa Man Allowed Baby to Hold Gun, Posted Video on Social Media


A southeast Iowa man was arrested after police say he posted a video of a child holding a firearm on social media.

18-year-old Mason McNeely of Ottumwa has been charged with neglect or abandonment of a dependent person, a Class C felony.

According to court records, authorities executed a search warrant on McNeely’s social media accounts and discovered a video of McNeely allowing a child, who appeared to be less than a year old, to hold a gun.

Police say the video was recorded on July 10th and McNeely was observed in the video as well as sitting next to the infant child and filming.

McNeely had custody of the child at the time of the incident, according to court documents.

A warrant was issued for McNeely’s arrest on November 10th and he was taken into custody on December 2nd.

McNeely is currently in the Wapello County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

McNeely waived his preliminary hearing and has pleaded not guilty to the charge he faces.
