Pekin Football Opener Moved to Schafer Stadium

By Jason Van Arkel, August 26, 2019

The Backyard Brawl is coming to the City of Bridges.

Because of storm damage that occurred  last Tuesday at Tom Stone Field, the Pekin football team is unable to host longtime rival Sigourney-Keota Friday night in the season opener for both teams. According to a post on the Panther football team’s Facebook page, many parts of the stadium suffered damage, most notably the scoreboard and some of the bleachers.

The two teams have agreed to face off Friday night at Schafer Stadium in Ottumwa, and they’ve added a JV game as well. That game will kick off at 5:00, with the varsity to follow at 7:30. The varsity game will be broadcast on 101.5 Kiss FM.

Pekin isn’t yet sure how many more home games might be affected by the storm damage. Their next home game is scheduled for September 13th against Mediapolis.
