Panthers outlast Lone Tree to win fifth game of the season, 8-5

PACKWOOD, IA – Looking to string together three straight wins, the Pekin Panthers (4-2, 4-1 SEISC – North) returned home to Packwood Monday night to host fellow North division opponent, Lone Tree (4-4, 3-2 SEISC – North).

It was the Lions who captured the early lead as three of the first four batters singled to lead off the game. Panther pitcher Chase Stansberry got out of the jam leaving the bases loaded by striking out the next two Lone Tree hitters. Heading to the bottom of the inning, his teammates’ bats erased the deficit.

Pekin brought home three as Mason Juhl scored Stansberry to tie the game, and Brady Latcham drove in two more with a single, giving the Panthers a 3-1 advantage. Pekin added two more in the second and third to push the lead to four, 5-1, prior to the Lions scoring two themselves in the top of the fifth, cutting the deficit to just two, 5-3.

But once again, the Panthers roared back in front, putting up a three spot in the bottom of the fifth, 8-3. Lone Tree attempted to mount a comeback, scoring a run in both the 6th and 7th, but Gage Gillam closed the door, earning the save, and securing the 8-5 victory.

With the division win, Pekin takes over the top spot in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Superconference standings. The Panthers will try to win their fourth straight, and put a further stranglehold on the number one position as they travel Tuesday night to face Louisa-Muscatine (4-4, 3-2 SEISC – North).
