Organizers of Centerville’s biggest annual event announced a world record was broken over the weekend.
Centerville’s Pancake Day held on Saturday broke the Guinness World Record for most pancakes served. In total, 14,280 pancakes were provided to hungry guests. The previous record was 13,000 pancakes this past June by a Hy-Vee store in Blue Springs, Missouri.
Event organizers say normally 17,000 pancakes are served for Pancake Day but the world record carries strict criteria. Each pancake must be 5 inches in diameter but no more than 1 centimeter in thickness.
Centerville’s Pancake Day originated in 1948 as a way for local manufacturers to show appreciation for its employees by serving them free pancakes. Centerville community members adopted the event and made it a regional celebration after the manufacturers left the area.
