The annual Ottumwa Softball Classic is a summer tradition in the City of Bridges, but the 2014 edition was never destined to get off the ground. Ottumwa awoke to persistent rains and heavy downpours on Saturday, and all six games of the classic were forced to be cancelled.
The classic is normally a two-day affair, but it was condensed to one day this year because the 4th of July fell on Friday. Fairfield, Solon and Southeast Polk were scheduled to play in the morning session, with Ottumwa, Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Keokuk set for the afternoon session before the rains came.
Ottumwa will finish the regular season Monday night at Indianola, in a doubleheader that will decide the Metro Conference championship. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00, and both games will be aired on 1240 KBIZ.
