Ottumwa School District tries again

The Ottumwa Board of Education will hold its regular meeting next Monday Evening at 6:00 PM, in the Media Room at EvansMiddle School, 812 Chester Avenue.

Interestingly, one item on the tentative agenda for the School Board is a recommendation to approve the purchase of the old Nash Finch Grocery Store in South Ottumwa, at a cost of $325,000.00. The School Board tabled the item at its last meeting, when it was determined that it would cost the district up to 6 million dollars to refurbish and remodel the building.

The District would like to use the NashFinchBuilding for School Administrative Offices, Board of Education Meetings, and storage areas. It is likely that the former WalshBuilding on McCarroll Drive will be demolished in the near future, due to deteriorating conditions of that structure.

The purchase of the NashFinchBuilding was tabled at the Board’s last meeting, to allow Board Members to further study the issue, particularly in light of the high estimated cost to remodel the building for future use by the School District.
