Ottumwa Man Charged With Buying Stolen Vehicle

Ottumwa Police have arrested a man they say knowingly bought a stolen vehicle.

According to court documents, on or around October 3, 2021, 40 year old Jeffery Wayne Guthrie “exercised control over a vehicle that had previously reported stolen.” Incident reports allege that Guthrie admitted to purchasing the vehicle for a small amount of cash and a partial trade. The amount paid was far below fair market value and he additionally did not obtain a title. The report states that Guthrie had reasonable grounds to believe the vehicle was stolen.

Guthrie was arrested on February 18, 2022, and charged with 2nd Degree Theft, a Class D felony. He was transported to the Wapello County Jail where he was later released on bond. His initial appearance took place Wednesday.

As a reminder, a criminal charge is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
