Ottumwa Man Charged In Construction Site Theft


An Ottumwa man is facing felony charges following an investigation into a construction site theft.

According to the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, on April 30th, 2020, Iowa Bridge & Culvert Co. reported a theft from their construction site on southern Highway 63. Approximately $4,000 in tools were reported stolen. After investigating, the Sheriff’s Department applied for and was granted a search warrant.

On May 1st, 2020, the search warrant was executed at a residence in the 1200 block of Monroe Ave. in Ottumwa. During the search, items stolen from the construction site were found. In addition to those items, a KTM dirtbike was located which had been reported stolen in November of 2019.

As a result of the search and investigation, 42 year old Shawn Robert Henkle was arrested and taken to the Wapello County Jail. He has been charged with two counts of 2nd Degree Theft, a D class Felony with a possible fine between $750 and $7500 as well as imprisonment for up to 5 years.

As a reminder, a criminal charge is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
