The Ottumwa Public Library is starting its multi-phase reopening process after closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Library Director Sonja Ferrell says the library along with public health officials, city staff, and the Library Board of Trustees began discussions on what reopening with certain restrictions in place would look like for the library. Ferrell says the safety and health of the staff and patrons is the primary concern.
Ferrell says the first phase starts with staff returning to the building on Monday. Furthermore, a drive-up service will begin later this week. Finally, reference calls are being taken via phone, Facebook Messenger, and email.
The library is also extending the due date for any borrowed items to May 15th. Ferrell says the library is willing to work with any patrons that feel they may not be able to return their materials on time.
