Oskaloosa residents who wish to hunt deer this season via bow and arrow must pass a test that will be conducted later this month.
Deer season runs from September 14, 2019 through January 10, 2020. Qualified hunters will be allowed to harvest deer within city limits using bow and arrows during this period.
To qualify, hunters must take and pass a proficiency test that will be held at After Hours Archery (216 North B Street in Oskaloosa). There will be two dates for the test: Thursday, August 22 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Saturday, August 24 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Hunters must have a form of ID and their current hunting license available when attending the test.
The test consists of five shots, taken from 20 yards away. Participants must score an 80 percent accuracy within the eight inch target. Hunters are allowed two attempts to pass the test. According to the city of Oskaloosa, 12 hunters qualified last year.
The Oskaloosa Urban Deer Management Program has a set of rules that must be followed. The rules can be found on the city’s website and will be made available at the two tests.
The city of Oskaloosa says 12 deer were harvested last year, up from eight two years ago.
