An Ottumwa man is in custody after police say he was found with drugs after committing a theft early Saturday morning.
At 3:20 AM, court records say 34-year-old Daniel Fields entered a property on the 600 block of Morris Street and removed a catalytic converter from a vehicle. Police arrived at the scene and Fields attempted to run away. Fields ignored verbal commands from authorities to stop.
Officers were able to catch up with Fields on the 900 block of Lillian Street, according to court documents. Fields had a backpack in his possession that contained his ID and a pouch with a brown, powdery substance consistent with heroin.
Fields was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance – third or subsequent offense (Class D felony), third-degree theft (aggravated misdemeanor), third-degree criminal mischief (aggravated misdemeanor), and interference with official acts (simple misdemeanor).
Fields is currently in the Wapello County Jail on a $50,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday.
