Jail Photo McDanel 1With yesterday’s pair of raids unsuccessful in capturing Dustin McDanel, wanted for the Sunday morning murder of Roger Wiseman JR, 25 of Ottumwa, we’ve reached out to Ottumwa’s chief of police Tom McAndrew. We asked McAndrew if any other agencies were assisting in the search or investigation: “A teletype was sent out across the state informing of the wanted subjects description.” The police department is being assisted by the state medical examiners office who is preforming the autopsy.

Often with high profile crimes like this, social media goes abuzz with questions on what could have been done differently. Many of those questioning this case focus on what the response times were for police, fire, and ORMICS. Chief McAndrew tells us that officers were on the scene about two and a half minutes after dispatchers received the 911 call at 02:31:30 am. When responding to a shooting or other dangerous situation, firefighters and paramedics are required to wait until the scene is cleared and deemed safe before responding, that clearance came at 02:35:42. The fire department arrived on the scene to begin providing medical assistance just 38 seconds later at 02:36:20. At 02:48:35, ORMICS and fire were en route to the hospital.

We also asked McAndrew about the seemingly large number of outstanding warrants in Wapello County. McAndrew tells us that while that number may seem large, the actual number of felons in Ottumwa are likely much lower. “Keep in mind warrants build up over time, people move out of the area. We may know where people are but are not going to have the Sheriff drive to California to pick up a person for a minor crime.”

Dustin McDanel continues to evade police more than three days after killing Roger Wiseman Jr. McDanel is to be considered armed and dangerous and anyone with information should call the Ottumwa Police Department at 641-683-0661. McAndrew would also like to remind the public that anyone wanting to give tips to the police can stay anonymous.
