Meetings for Landowners of Former Coal Mine Land


A series of informational meetings will be held across southeast Iowa to discuss Iowa’s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program and landowner options for management of these sites after reclamation has occurred.

The meetings will discuss what reclamation is, how properties qualify for reclamation, management options and protecting reclaimed land.   Assistance for improvement and maintenance of this fragile land will also be discussed.  Any landowner of land previously strip mined is welcome to attend. We especially encourage those with reclaimed sites to join us.

Presenters include personnel from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship-Division of Soil Conservation, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, and local Soil and Water Conservation Districts.  The meetings are organized by Pathfinders RC&D through the support of a Resource Enhancement and Protection-Conservation Education Program grant.

Meeting times and locations are:

  • Oskaloosa – Tuesday, April 1 from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. at Mahaska County Extension Office
  • Knoxville – Tuesday, April 1 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. at Marion County Extension Office
  • Bloomfield – Wednesday, April 2 from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. at Southern Iowa Electric Coop
  • Albia – Wednesday, April 2 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. at Monroe County Extension Office
