PACKWOOD, IA – The Pekin Panthers (2-1, 2-0 SEISC – North) entered Tuesday night’s home game versus the Highland Huskies (2-1, 2-1 SEISC – North) on a two-game winning streak. After losing their season opener at New London, the boys in red and black strung together a pair of run-rule wins, 17-6 @ Wapello and 15-0 vs. Winfield-Mt. Union. The Huskies came into their road matchup versus Pekin on a similar streak having won their two latest meetings, 7-4 versus Lone Tree and 17-2 at Louisa-Muscatine.
Both teams remained scoreless through the first inning prior to Highland striking for four runs in the top of the second on a two-RBI single from Chase Schultz, followed by a two-run double by Mason McFarland. Pekin brought home one in the third with Kennan Winn knocking in Brady Millikin with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to three, 4-1.
The Huskies answered right back though with a five run fourth, highlighted by Connor Grinstead’s grand slam to push the lead out to eight, 9-1. The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh as Pekin attempted to mount a late comeback. Winn brought home three runs with one swing of the bat, belting a home run, his first of the season, to make it 9-5 Highland. But the late rally faltered as the Huskies went on to secure the four run victory.
Pekin will be back on the diamond Thursday at Hillcrest Academy (1-4, 1-2 SEISC – North).
