A Wapello County jury on Thursday acquitted an Ottumwa man who had been accused of sexually abusing a young girl.

The jury found Richard Lunsford not guilty on charges of second-degree sexual abuse, lascivious acts with a child, and incest. Had Lunsford been convicted, he would have faced up to 25 years in prison for the sexual abuse charge, and five years in prison for each of the other two charges.

Lunsford was arrested on March 1st, and accused of sexually assaulting a female family member under the age of 12. Court records indicate the alleged assault would have taken place sometime in 2010, and was reported sometime between 2012 and 2014. Investigators had said Lunsford forced the girl to perform oral sex on him, and told her that she would be in trouble with the police if she told anyone.

Lunsford still faces another day in court on an unrelated matter. He’s accused of stealing over $600 dollars in merchandise from the Menards store in Ottumwa last August. His trial on a third-degree theft charge is scheduled to begin August 12th. Lunsford has eight previous theft convictions dating back to 1999, among a long list of charges and court appearances. If convicted in this case, he faces up to two years in jail.
