Investigation Underway After Self Inflicted Gunshot Death


The police have released the identity of a young man who died Saturday from a self-inflicted gunshot.

According to a press release, on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at approximately 8:11 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department responded to an apartment on the 400 block of N. Court Street in Ottumwa, on a report that a male had been shot at the location. Police arrived and found 17 year old James John Barbieri, who had sustained a gunshot wound to his head. Barbieri was transported to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center and from there transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, Barbieri passed away from his injuries on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

Preliminary investigations identified that Barbieri was handling a firearm at which time the weapon discharged and the round struck Barbieri in his head. The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.
