Firemen conduct a controlled burn

(Ottumwa)— The Ottumwa Fire Department took advantage of some good weather today to do some spring cleaning, sort of.

Assistant Fire Chief Kleinman told Ottumwa Radio news the fire department conducted a controlled burn this morning in the 1800 block of East Main Street.  Firemen set a two story house on fire to give firemen……….some of them fairly new a chance to experience the real thing.

Kleiman says many years ago the building served as a grocery store before being turned into a two story house. He says the exercise included not only firemen but also a fire dog from the State Fire Marshall’s office in Des Moines.  In addition, Kleinman says under state law fire departments can conduct up to two such exercises each year.

Firemen will remain on the scene until the flames have been completed extinguished.
