Fifth annual citizens police academy begins

The fifth annual Ottumwa Citizens Police Academy began Monday night at the Wapello County Law Enforcement Center. Chief Tom McAndrew says that of the 60 applicants, 25 were selected to participate. This years participants include representatives from Ottumwa Radio, the city council, River Hills Community Health Center, Cargill, Douds Stone, and several unaffiliated participants.

The citizens police academy was started five years ago to give the community a chance to learn more about law enforcement and experience the daily operations of the Ottumwa Police Department.

During the first night, Chief McAndrew and Sheriff Miller led participants on a tour of the jail, dispatch center, and administrative areas.
