City council holds lengthy meeting

As expected, the Ottumwa city council last night approved a recommendation to award a contract to an Ottumwa contractor to rebuild the Central Addition Monument in Wayside Park.

The city received one bid from Dan Davis Masonry in the amount of 9998-dollars to do the work.  The project is being funded by a ten thousand dollar grant from the Wapello County Foundation.

Councilman Skip Stevens questioned why other contractors in the city were not included in the bidding process.

Also last night the council failed to approve a recommendation to replace a furnace at the Water Pollution Control Facility.  Only one bid was received from Woody’s Heating and Air Conditioning of Ottumwa.  They submitted a bid price of 64-hundred dollars.

Councilman Skip Stevens asked the matter be tabled so the city’s new engineer can become involved in the matter.  He also questioned why more bids were not sought by the city.

Officials hope to raise 250-thousand dollars for the project. Uehling  said “we need to key ahead of the curve in regards to making improvements to the events center.
