City Approves Flood Protection


(Ottumwa)— If and when a 100 year storm hits Ottumwa, the Ottumwa Water and Hydro will be well protected.

During a special council meeting held Monday afternoon at City Hall………the city council approved a resolution awarding a contract for contract 3 of the 2010 Flood Protection Mitigation project.

The project will consist of constructing a flood wall around the Ottumwa Water and Hydro plant.  The wall will protect the treatment plant from a 100 year storm.

The city entered into an agreement with FEMA on September 18thof 2012 for a grant in the amount of more than 16-million dollars for the project.  The state’s share of the grant will be covered by the supplemental CDBG Disaster Recovery Funding in the amount of more than 4-million dollars.

Bids were received and open by the City on February 26th.  The low bid was submitted by Portzen Construction Incorporated ofDubuque, Iowa in the amount of 1.3-million dollars.

The project is expected to be completed in December of 2015.

And as expected, the council approved a recommendation to approve a contract with Kaboom to purchase new playground equipment for Wildwood Park.  The new playground equipment is expected to be installed on or about June 13th.

The city is asking for about 150 volunteers to help install the new equipment.
