In a few seasons, the Iowa State football team may hand its kicking or punting duties to a Centerville graduate.
Big Reds star Trent McCann committed to Iowa State as a preferred walk-on Sunday evening, announcing his decision on Twitter. The senior has hit all three of his field goal tries for Centerville this season, including a 52-yarder. McCann has also made 11 of 12 point-after attempts, and is averaging 41.9 yards per punt with a long of 69 yards.
“After a great visit yesterday, I will be accepting my PWO from Iowa State University to continue my academic and athletic career,” McCann said in his statement. “First off, I want to thank God for blessing me with the abilities and opportunities He has given me. Secondly my family for always supporting me, and always making sure I had opportunities. Next thank you to my coaches, community, and teammates for also supporting me.”
McCann does more than just kick for Centerville. He leads the Big Reds with 15 receptions for 258 yards and a touchdown. On defense, he’s totaled 10.5 tackles and an interception.
Centerville opens district play Friday night at home versus Des Moines Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00, and you can hear the broadcast on 97.7 Tom FM.
