Pekin Still Best Among Area Teams in RPI

By Jason Van Arkel, October 01, 2018

The Iowa High School Athletic Association on Monday released its fourth set of RPI rankings for the 2018 season. Pekin remains the highest-ranked area school in terms of RPI, after what was a tough week for area teams on the gridiron.

The Panthers stayed in the top ten in the Class A RPI rankings, despite its heartbreaking loss to Highland on Friday. Pekin fell four spots to #8 in Class A, with a road trip to undefeated BGM looming this week. The Bears are ranked third in Class A in RPI, and are also ranked fifth in the Radio Iowa poll. Pekin fell out of the Radio Iowa poll this week.

Since only 16 teams in each class make the playoffs, being ranked in the top 16 in RPI can roughly be considered playoff position. The only area team besides Pekin currently sitting in the top 16 is Oskaloosa, which moved up four spots to #12 in Class 3A after hammering Newton on Homecoming night. In Class 1A, Sigourney-Keota is on the verge of playoff position, having moved up three spots to #17 after a blowout win over Van Buren.

Fairfield was the biggest riser among area teams this week, climbing ten spots to #28 in Class 3A by virtue of an easy win over Fort Madison. Cardinal took the biggest tumble, falling seven spots to #19 in Class A after losing to Durant.

The RPI formula factors in a team’s winning percentage, weighted at 37.5%, the winning percentage of its opponents, also weighted at 37.5%, and its opponents’ opponents winning percentage, weighted at 25%. The calculations for both the second and third factors include all of a team’s opponents for the season, including the ones they have yet to play.

Teams that win district championships will qualify for the playoffs automatically, with the rest of the 16-team field in each class determined by the final RPI standings. This week’s rankings for each of our area teams is listed below, as well as how far up or down they moved from last week.
