Four Cyclones Earn Spots on National Watch Lists

By Jason Van Arkel, July 20, 2018

In yet another sign that football season is just around the corner, several end-of-season college football awards announced their preseason watch lists this week. Four Iowa State Cyclones find themselves on various watch lists as they approach fall camp.

Junior running back David Montgomery is on the watch lists for both the Doak Walker Award and the Maxwell Award. The Doak Walker Award goes to the country’s best running back, while the Maxwell Award is given to “college football’s player of the year.” Montgomery began last season on the Doak Walker watch list as well, and that was before he compiled 1,146 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns while setting a national record by forcing 109 missed tackles. He begins the 2018 season on a number of preseason All-America teams.

Senior quarterback Kyle Kempt finds himself on the Davey O’Brien Award watch list, an award given annually to the nation’s best quarterback. A year ago, Kempt was an unknown senior walk-on, before leading Iowa State to upsets over Oklahoma and TCU, and ISU’s first bowl win since 2009. He set a school record by completing 66.3% of his passes, and tossed 15 touchdowns to just three interceptions in his eight starts.

Senior cornerback Brian Peavy earned a spot on the Bednarik Award watch list. The Bednarik goes to the top defensive player in the country each season. Peavy made second team all-Big 12 in 2017, recording two interceptions and two fumble recoveries to go along with his 88 tackles. He enters his final college season as the NCAA active leader in career passes defended with 35.

Finally sophomore tight end Chase Allen is on the watch list for the Mackey Award, which goes to the country’s top tight end. Allen earned second team all-Big 12 honors in 2017, and is a preseason first team all-conference selection by multiple outlets this season.
