Today’s the Day: Bulldog Baseball Ready for Busch Stadium

By Jason Van Arkel, June 30, 2018

The road trip of a lifetime for the Ottumwa baseball team is finally here. Tonight, the Bulldogs play at Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals, taking on Mount Pleasant.

1240 AM / 102.7 FM KBIZ and the Ottumwa Radio Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game. The start time will depend on how long the game lasts between the Cardinals and Atlanta Braves, which begins at 6:15. Ottumwa and Mount Pleasant will watch the game, then be allowed on the field and into the dugouts once the field has been cleaned up and prepared for them to play. The estimated start time tonight is at 10:30, but it could be a little earlier or a little later. The Ottumwa Radio Sports Twitter account (@OttRadioSports) will announce both the broadcast time and the first pitch time as soon as it becomes available.

For both teams, this will be partly about the experience, but also a business trip. Both Ottumwa and Mount Pleasant are having strong seasons so far, with OHS coming in at 21-11 while the Panthers are 18-10. Both are hoping to use the game as a momentum-builder heading into the final stretch of the regular season. Ottumwa in particular is hoping to find a spark tonight; the Bulldogs struggled at times on Monday while sweeping Des Moines North, then got swept Wednesday at Des Moines Lincoln, suffering their first conference losses of the season.

The late-evening start time does offer one advantage to both teams. St. Louis is under an excessive heat warning today, but temperatures should be milder by the time Ottumwa and Mount Pleasant take the field. The forecast for 10:00 pm calls for temps in the low 80s.

For the Bulldog players–many of whom are Cardinal fans, and have attended several games at Busch Stadium over the years–tonight will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play on the same field where their heroes play. For fans who aren’t making the trip to St. Louis, be sure to catch all the action tonight on 1240 AM / 102.7 FM KBIZ.
