Drake Relays: Friday Results for Ottumwa, Cardinal, Pekin, Sigourney, Oskaloosa (Updated)

By Jason Van Arkel, April 27, 2018

Area prep athletes competed in seven events during the Friday morning and early-afternoon sessions of this year’s Drake Relays. Check out their results, listed by event.

BOYS DISTANCE MEDLEY RELAY

The Pekin relay team took second place, and came oh-so-close to a Drake Relays title. They blazed past the competition in the second heat, posting a time of 3:30.99. The Panthers hoped that time would hold up after the third and final heat, but the Urbandale squad crossed the line in 3:30.25, edging Pekin by less than a second.

GIRLS 100-METER HURDLES

Sigourney’s Autum Barthelman, against a field composed mainly of hurdlers from Class 4A schools, ran a 15.26 in the prelims to place fourth and qualify for the final. Two and a half hours later, she ran the exact time in the final, which earned her a fifth-place finish.

BOYS 110-METER HURDLES

Mason Aschenbrenner of Cardinal, competing for one of the smallest schools in the field, qualified for the final by running a 14.85 in the prelims, placing sixth. He improved his time in the final, running a 14.82 that gave him a sixth-place finish.

BOYS 100-METER DASH

Both Ottumwa’s Austyn Casillas and Pekin’s Monico Requena ran this morning in track’s signature event, although neither was able to advance out of the prelims. Requena’s 11.52 placed him 24th, while Casillas finished 26th with a time of 11.53.

BOYS HIGH JUMP

Ottumwa’s Jonathan Bossou competed in the high jump this morning, but could not clear the initial height of 6-foot-1 in his three attempts. He was one of five jumpers to be scored as no height.

GIRLS 800 METERS

Ottumwa’s Alli Bookin-Nosbisch competed in her first individual Drake Relays event. The sophomore finished 12th, turning in a time of 2:17.76.

BOYS 800 METERS

Oskaloosa’s Carter Huyser had been 13th among qualifiers for this event, but improved dramatically on that by running seventh. The junior posted a time of 1:59.46.
