Ottumwa Gets 1st Indoor Event Win of Track Season

The Ottumwa girls track and field team’s strong relay program earned its first win of the indoor season on Thursday, winning the 4×400-meter relay at the Demon Indoor Meet hosted by Cornell College in Mount Vernon. The team of Carollin Mellin, Kierra Bishop, Alli Bookin-Nosbisch and Grace Bookin-Nosbisch–all of them underclassmen–bested the 28-team field with a time of 4:10.06, more than two seconds better than 2nd-place Iowa City West.

Ottumwa and Fairfield were the two are teams competing at Cornell College on Thursday; the Bulldogs ran in their second event of the indoor season, while the Trojans made their season debut. Both squads earned several top-20 finishes on the day.


OHS entered two teams in the 4×800-meter relay, and both squads finished in the top ten. The team of Carollin Mellin, Isabelle Mellin, Sophie Ford and Grace Bookin-Nosbisch came in fourth, while the squad of Abby Bowers, Meghan Coulter, Alejandra Gaspar and Alli Bookin-Nosbisch finished 7th. Kacy Nickerson and Anne Guest both finished tied for fourth in the high jump. Kylee Spurgeon tied for 16th in the 60-meter dash, and Sophie Ford ran 19th in the 1500 meters.


Ashley Bloomquist continued her strong distance running career, finishing fourth in the 1500 meters. Malory Jones also had a top-five finish, tying for fourth in the high jump. Aluna Olaniyi qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, where she placed 11th. Kara Jeffrey ran 12th in the 400 meters. The Trojan 4×400-meter relay team came in 15th, while the distance medley relay team finished 19th.

The boys teams from Ottumwa and Fairfield were scheduled to compete in the boys’ portion of the meet on Friday.
