OHS Boys Track 2017

Ottumwa Boys Open Indoor Season at UNI

By Jason Van Arkel, March 07, 2018

The Ottumwa boys track and field team got its indoor season underway Tuesday, competing in a large field at the A.D. Dickinson Relays. Northern Iowa hosts the annual two-day event, which annually attracts some of the best prep track programs in the state. The girls events ran Monday (see our recap here), with the boys events on Tuesday.

OHS didn’t manage any top-three finishes in the boys events, but still had several strong performances, especially in the relay races. The Bulldog 4×400-meter relay squad just missed the podium, finishing fourth in a field of 42 teams. The 4×800-meter team came in sixth in a field of 53 teams. Ottumwa competed in both events at last year’s state meet, and seems to have carried that success over into the 2018 season. Additionally, the OHS 4×200-meter team came in 11th in a field of 57 teams.

Junior Sam Yeaway turned in the best individual performance for Ottumwa, coming in fifth in the 200-meter dash out of 158 runners. Yeaway qualified for state in the 200 last spring. Several other Bulldogs had top-20 finishes in large fields as well. Austyn Casillas ran 17th in the 200, and 19th in the 400. Jarrett Blunt placed 18th in the 60-meter hurdles, and Conner Riley ran 18th in the invite-only 1600 meters. Jonathon Bossou finished 14th in the high jump.

Both Ottumwa track teams have one more indoor event this week. The Bulldog girls will be one of 28 teams competing in an event at Cornell College in Mount Vernon on Thursday, and the Bulldog boys will be one of 29 teams running at Cornell on Friday.
