The indoor portion of the high school track and field season began this week with the A.D. Dickinson Relays at Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Ottumwa, Davis County, Oskaloosa and Sigourney were among over 40 girls teams who competed in Monday’s events. The boys’ events are running today, including the teams from Ottumwa, Davis County, Centerville and Sigourney. Listed below are the top finishes for the area girls’ teams.

The OHS girls were strong last season in the middle distance relays, and they picked up right where they left off to open this season. The Bulldog 4×400 relays team earned a podium finish, coming in third in a field of 29 teams, most of which compete in Class 4A. The Ottumwa 4×800 team just missed the podium, finishing fourth in a field of 43 teams. Individually, freshman Anne Guest had a strong start to her Bulldog track and field career, finishing ninth in the high jump.

The Lady Mustangs only competed in three events, but got a strong run from Alysa Shirkey, who finished tenth in the 200-meter dash in a field of 132 competitors.

After winning last year’s Class 1A state team championship, the Sigourney girls started 2018 with more strong performances from the Barthelman sisters. Senior Autum Barthelman made the finals in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. She ran fourth in the hurdles final, and 16th in the dash. Junior Summer Barthelman came in third in the long jump, and ran 15th in the 400-meter dash.

Ava VandeWall had the highest finish for the Oskaloosa girls, coming in 16th in the high jump.
