3A Bracket

Osky to Face Sergeant Bluff-Luton in Class 3A Quarterfinals

By Jason Van Arkel, February 27, 2018

The Iowa High School Athletic Association on Tuesday released the bracket for the Class 3A boys state basketball tournament, awarding Oskaloosa the #3 seed and placing the Indians in a quarterfinal matchup against 6th-seeded Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Oskaloosa will play in the last of the 3A quarterfinals, tipping off Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 at Wells Fargo Arena.

Making its first trip to state since 1996, Oskaloosa enters the tournament with a 21-3 record, having beaten Carlisle 61-48 in the substate final. The Indians, ranked #3 in Class 3A by the Associated Press, bounced back from a pair of defeats in early February to win their last four games in a row. Senior Jarad Kruse leads Osky in scoring with 15.6 points per game, with junior Cole Henry (15.3), sophomore Xavier Foster (12.6) and senior Spencer Tucker (10.5) not far behind.

At 15-9, Sergeant Bluff-Luton was not ranked, but did receive votes in the last AP poll. The Warriors were only 6-9 after losing at Council Bluffs Lewis Central on January 19th, but have won nine games in a row since then. They upset #10 Sioux City Bishop Heelan 76-66 in the substate final. SBL also boasts four players who average double figures in scoring: junior Conner Groves (15.3), senior Jeremiah Khat (13.3), junior Sam DeMoss (11.2) and sophomore Daniel Wright (10.7). Oskaloosa did not play Sergeant Bluff-Luton this season, nor did they have any common opponents.

If Oskaloosa prevails in its quarterfinal matchup, they face either 2nd-seeded Mount Pleasant (21-3) or 7th-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock (18-6). Mount Pleasant ended the regular season tied with Cedar Rapids Xavier for the #1 ranking in the AP poll, while Waverly-Shell Rock was unranked but receiving votes.

On the other side of the 3A bracket, #1 seed Xavier faces #8 seed Marion, and #4 seed Glenwood takes on #5 seed Norwalk. The Xavier-Marion matchup will be the first of the 3A quarterfinal games, tipping off at 11:15 Tuesday morning. Glenwood-Norwalk follows at 1:00, then Mt. Pleasant-WSR at 2:45, before Osky-SBL wraps up the day for Class 3A.
