2018 District Wrestling: Running Blog

4:57pm: Updated tally of state qualifiers: Centerville – 5; Pekin – 5; Albia – 2; Sigourney-Keota – 2; Moravia – 2; Davis County – 1; EBF – 1; Fairfield – 1; Ottumwa – 1; Mount Pleasant – 1. Ottumwa, Mount Pleasant and Oskaloosa still have wrestleback chances.

4:55pm: Ben Mason makes it two state qualifiers for Albia, winning his wrestleback at 195.

4:51pm: For Moravia, both Wil Martin (113) and Micholas Martin (145) survive their wrestleback matches to advance to state.

4:49pm: No surprise, but Sigourney’s Kaleb Reeves is head back to state after winning his 220-pound district title. Kaleb is a four-time state qualifier.

4:47pm: Pekin gets a fifth wrestler to state, Mason Juhl at 195 pounds.

4:43pm: Just got back from filming the 182-pound final in Mt. Pleasant, where Ottumwa’s Joey Mitchell got a takedown in overtime to win 4-2 and go back to state for the second straight year.

3:55pm: In Class 3A, Ottumwa’s Nathanael Shoemaker (126) and Vinnie Vass (138) both have wrestlebacks. At 145, Mount Pleasant’s Nate Wallace faces Oskaloosa’s Leland Evans in a wrestleback.

3:53pm: EBF’s Sage Walker (145) and Albia’s Ben Mason (195) both have wrestlebacks for state qualification.

3:50pm: Fairfield’s Brendon Lunsford wins the district title at 285 and heads back to state.

3:48pm: Davis County’s Davan Goering wins his wrestleback match at 126, and is headed to the state tournament.

3:04pm: Pekin could still get more, but for now the Panthers have Zach Hammes (132), Drake Harbison (138), Keaton Baayen (152) and Kaden Baker (160) qualified for state.

3:02pm: for Moravia, both Wil Martin (113) and Nicholas Martin (145) face wrestlebacks for the right to go to state.

3:00pm: Mount Pleasant’s Corbin Broeker (106) goes to state after a runner-up finish at districts.

2:58pm: Sigourney’s Mason Dye (106) goes to state as a district champion. EBF’s Tyler Landgrebe (120) advances as a district runner-up.

2:55pm: As expected, top-ranked Aden Reeves of Albia has won his 120-pound district championship.

2:53pm: Davis County’s Davan Goering has a wrestleback at 126 to qualify for state. Wilston Wuthrich finished 4th at 152.

2:50pm: Centerville already has four state qualifiers: Matthew Lewis (106), Nathaniel Genobana (113), Kayden Kauzlarich (126) and Tiger Terpstra (145). Genobana and Kauzlarich won district titles. At 160, Stephen Wardlow faces a wrestleback to qualify for state.

2:45pm: Apologies as we had some major internet difficulties. Working on catching up.

1:15pm: Two heavyweights advance. Fairfield’s Brendon Lunsford reaches his 2A final. Ottumwa’s Jacob Brownlee is into the 3A semifinals.

12:56pm: EBF’s Sage Walker (145) advances to his final, the second Rocket to do so.

12:54pm: Centerville’s Tiger Terpstra (145) and Stephen Wardlow (160) both advance. All five Centerville wrestlers will compete in 1st-place matches.

12:48pm: Action heating up. Joey Mitchell (182) and Vinnie Vass (138) make the semifinals for Ottumwa. Zach Hammes (132) and Drake Harbison (138) have made the finals for Pekin. Top-ranked Aden Reeves (120) of Albia breezes into his final.

12:23pm: Davan Goering for Davis County is into the final at 126, winning by 2nd-period fall.

12:10pm: Centerville’s first three wrestlers (Matthew Lewis-106, Nathaniel Geonbana-113, Kayden Kauzlarich-126) all won their semifinal matches by fall.

12:05pm: A couple of early pins for Ottumwa. Jake Frazier at 106 and Nathanael Shoemaker at 126, both advancing to the semifinals.

11:45am: Mats are being cleared for cleaning. Wrestling begins in less than 20 minutes.
