Prep Football: Week 9 Playoff Scenarios

By Jason Van Arkel, October 20, 2017

Two area prep football teams, Pekin in Class A and Centerville in Class 2A, have already qualified for the playoffs. Three other teams enter the final game of the season with a chance to make the field as well.

The Indians have a decent shot to get into the Class 3A playoffs, but they’ll need some help. First, Osky must beat West Burlington/Notre Dame, and doing so by 17 points or more gives them the best chance to grab a wild-card berth. Then, they need the following games to go their way:

–Webster City defeats Boone.

–Norwalk defeats Carlisle by 10 or more points, OR Carlisle beats Norwalk by 4 or more points.

–Decorah doesn’t beat Independence by more than 7 points.

–Bishop Heelan doesn’t beat Spirit Lake by more than 13 points.

There are two wild-card berths available, so if three of these four results go Oskaloosa’s way, that should be enough for them.

The sure way for the Cobras to make the Class 1A playoff field is to win on the road at Wilton tonight. If they lose, they would still have an outside shot at a wild-card berth, although it would have to be a close loss to give them a realistic chance. S-K would then need the following results in the wild-card race:

–Emmetsburg loses to West Lyon by as many points as possible (17 or more is ideal)

–Maquoketa Valley loses to Bellevue

–Eagle Grove loses to South Hamilton

South Winneshiek plays Belmond-Klemme tonight, and the loser will likely take one of the two wild-card berths, so Sigourney-Keota will need all of the results above to go their way. Also, the standings in District 5 are likely to end up with a 3-way tie for second place between Pleasantville, Interstate 35 and Woodward-Granger, so the Cobras would need to have a higher point differential than the two teams that lose the tiebreaker in that district.

There is no wild-card available in 8-Man football, so the scenario for the Mohawks is simple. Beat Melcher-Dallas at home and get in; lose the game and the season ends.
