By Jason Van Arkel, August 19, 2017

It may have been a shortened preseason for the Pekin football team, but the Panthers came to the season opener ready to play, as they blasted Albia 41-7 Friday night. Senior running back Monico Requena tore through the Blue Demons for four touchdowns, including this long scamper in the opening quarter.

Albia’s only score came on a 59-yard TD pass in the first quarter from Cade Crall to Tyler Stringfellow. Other than that, the Panther defense shut the Blue Demons down, forcing a pair of safeties on the way to an easy win.

In other area football action from the opening weekend, Moravia started its season by steamrolling Murray 66-6. Hunter Arbogast threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns in the win, with favorite target Nick Martin totaling 146 receiving yards and two scores. R.J. Hamilton chipped in 74 rushing yards and a pair of TDs for the Mohawks as well.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont had a halftime lead at East Marshall Friday night, but couldn’t hold it, falling at East Marshall 22-18. Trey Moore rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another, but the Rockets gave up two TDs in the fourth quarter as they dropped their season opener.
