Prep Football: Pekin, Cardinal Lose Danville Games From Schedules

By Jason Van Arkel, August 02, 2017

For the second season in a row, the Pekin and Cardinal football teams won’t have a chance to beat Danville on the football field.

According to a post on Cardinal’s Facebook page, Danville has cancelled varsity football for the 2017 season. Both Pekin and Cardinal were scheduled to face the Bears this season in Class A, District 6. Cardinal would have hosted Danville on October 6th, while Pekin would have ended the regular season at Danville on October 20th. The Comets and Panthers, as well as the rest of Danville’s opponents, will now have an open date on each of their schedules.

Last year, Danville forfeited the final six games of its season due to a lack of healthy players, and school officials have decided they don’t have enough players to field a team this year. Both Pekin and Cardinal received forfeit victories last season. This season, since the cancellation comes before the season begins, none of Danville’s opponents will be credited with a win.

For Cardinal, the change means moving their annual Homecoming ceremonies. The Comets will now celebrate Homecoming on October 13th when they host Montezuma.

All of the teams affected by Danville’s cancellation have the option to try to schedule a non-district game that would fill the open date. However, since both Pekin and Cardinal were scheduled to face Danville in October, it’s very unlikely that they could find opponents that have those dates off so late in the season.
