OHS Girls Track 2017

Class 4A Automatic State Qualifiers: Ottumwa Scores 6, Hopes For More

By Jason Van Arkel, May 12, 2017

The Ottumwa track teams combined to earn six automatic bids to state Thursday, at their state qualifying meet held at Iowa City High. Both the Bulldog girls and boys finished fifth in the team standings, and headed for home knowing they could still receive several more bids to the state meet.  In Class 4A, only the top two finishers of each event qualify automatically for state. The remaining spots in the state field are filled by the next best 12 performances statewide, and OHS had several 3rd-place and 4th-place finishes that might be good enough to get into the state field. The full list of state qualifiers will be announced sometime on Friday. Below are the automatic qualifiers.

OTTUMWA (4 girls events, 2 boys events)

Girls 400 meters: Kierra Bishop

Girls 4×400, 4×800 and distance medley relays

Boys 200 meters and 400 meters: Sam Yeaway

Dalton Bowers hopes to qualify on time after finishing 3rd in the boys 1600, and 5th in the 3200. Kylie Latham also hopes her times are good enough, as she finished 3rd in both the girls 1500 and 3000. A.J. Nelson ran 3rd in the girls 100-meter hurdles, and the Bulldog girls shuttle hurdle relay team came in 4th. The OHS boys had 3rd-place finishes in the 4×400 and 4×800, and 4th-place finishes in the sprint medley, distance medley and shuttle hurdle relays.
