OHS Track Runs Strong at Jim Duncan Invitational

The Jim Duncan Invitational gives high school track teams from the CIML an early opportunity to run on the same Drake Stadium track that will host both the Drake Relays at the end of the month, and the state track meet in May. Several members of Ottumwa’s track squads made the most of that opportunity on Saturday, turning in strong performances against quality competition.
The best Bulldog finish came in the girls’ 3,000-meter race, as Kylie Latham outlasted her competition to win the run and claim a Duncan Invitational championship. Latham also finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run. Other girls top-ten performances for Ottumwa included Kierra Bishop running third in the 400-meter dash, and Jillian Heaton placing tenth in the discus.
The OHS girls also ran strong in the relays. The team of Carollin Mellin, Grace Bookin-Nosbisch, Alli Bookin-Nosbisch and Bishop came in second in the 4×400-meter relay. Mellin and the Bookin-Nosbisch twins also joined with Abby Bowers to place fourth in the 4×800-meter relay. In the shuttle hurdle relay, A.J. Nelson, Elle Weilbrenner, Morgan Zasiger and Madi Wiley earned a seventh-place finish. The Bulldog distance medley relay team of Alexzandra Woudenberg, Bowers, Katie Nelson and Morgan Lawson finished tenth.
The best finishes for the Ottumwa boys all came in the relay races. Connor Riley, Austyn Casillas, Roger Cruz and Sam Yeaway teamed up to finish third in the 4×400-meter race. Casillas and Yeaway joined Nik Batterson and Caleb Barndt for a third-place finish in the sprint medley relay. Barndt, Casillas, Yeaway and Riley earned fourth place in the distance medley relay.
The OHS boys’ best individual finish came from distance runner Dalton Bowers, who placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run. Bowers also finished tenth in the 3,200 meters. Yeaway and Casillas ran seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. In the field events, Noah Boyer came in seventh in the high jump.
