When you enter the national tournament ranked second in the country, you’re not supposed to have any trouble in the first round. Wednesday night, the William Penn men followed the script to perfection.
The Statesmen reached triple digits for the tenth time this season, hammering Loyola of Louisiana 100-78 in the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament at Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium. William Penn improves to 31-3, and ends Loyola’s season at 22-10.
William Penn owned the paint all night, outscoring the Wolf Pack 58-32 inside. Torren Jones led the way for the Statesmen with 24 points, and Charles Knowles added 23. No other player hit double figures for WPU, but Lionel Ellison, Dashawn Benson, Kordario Fleming, Jeremy Postell and Brandon Trotter all had nine points each. Loyola’s leading scorer was Jalen Gray with 20 points.
WPU gets Thursday off, before facing Georgetown of Kentucky on Friday. Georgetown beat Park of Missouri in the opening round. Friday’s game tips off at 2:15 in Kansas City. If William Penn wins, they would advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
