Bowers Shines for OHS; Albia, Pekin Relay Teams Excel at ISU Invite

By Jason Van Arkel, March 15, 2017

If Ottumwa distance runner Dalton Bowers wants to go out on top in his senior year of track, he’s off to a good start.

A week ago, Bowers earned a spot in Ottumwa’s Bob Warren Hall of Fame by running the second-fastest 3,200 meter time in school history. Tuesday, he bettered that time while running at the Iowa State Boys High School Classic in Ames. Bowers turned in a time of 9:49.86, close to four seconds better than his previous mark. It was good enough for ninth place in a crowded 3,200-meter field. Bowers also placed seventh in the 1,600-meter race.

The relay races in Ames were good to all three area schools at the meet. Ottumwa’s 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team finished in seventh place. Pekin placed 13th in that race, as well as fourth in the 4×800 relay and ninth in the 4×400 relay. That 4×400 race is Albia’s signature race, and they finished third at ISU, behind only a pair of Class 4A teams. Albia had one other top-ten performance, with Tyler Stringfellow tying for eighth in the high jump.
